Revisiting Casa Cubista's pottery

We have recently returned from a great trip back to Alentejo, Portugal where we were invited to visit Casa Cubista's new principle pottery. Not only was it a great pleasure to meet Paulo, the head ceramicist, as well as the painters, glazers and kiln technicians, it was also completely inspiring for me as a ceramicist to see these experts at work.

Paulo, Casa Cubista's ceramicist
Many of the team are at least second generation potters and painters. It's very much a family affair as Paulo's mother and wife work at the pottery too, both expertly painting Casa Cubista's distinctive designs.

This team are focussed on both art and accuracy, creating Casa Cubista's collection with incredibly high standards in both make and finish. It was an absolute joy to see Paulo throwing on the wheel, creating exquisite and consistent pieces just using a piece of bamboo as a shaping tool.

Paolo uses barely any water when throwing the local terracotta clay, and every possible scrap of excess clay is saved and reused so there's very little waste.

It was a delight to see such skill at work, for every stage of producing this collection. Being able to visit makers is a very special part of my role and also gives me the absolute confidence to attribute our values to a brand, and we are so excited to share lots of new Casa Cubista products with you.
