Named for the beautiful William Morris design from which this shopper is made, the Compton is a limited-edition Plum & Belle product, crafted from a piece of vintage fabric that has aged beautifully, softening and fading slightly through its lifetime.
We worked out the size of shopping bag so that there was zero waste fabric left at the end of the making process, which feels very satisfying. It's lightweight but sturdy. Cut and stitched by hand in London with great care, especially for us.
Our values and this product:
- Natural materials
- Limited edition
- Minimal waste, pollutants and emissions
- Made in the UK
About the print designer:
Williams Morris was one of the most influential creatives during the Victorian period, and one of the guiding lights of the Arts and Crafts movement. During his lifetime he was probably best known as a poet, but now we know him best for his very particular design style. His signature interiors patterns are still well loved and widely used. Compton was Morris's last wallpaper design, created in the late 19th century especially for Compton Hall in Wolverhampton, where it was used as a wallpaper and textile. You can read all about the Compton design here on the V&A's wonderful website.
